How signing works in Michigan

Signing your will

  1. Gather two adult witnesses. It is best if they are not people named in your will.
  2. Sign your will while both witnesses watch.
  3. Each witness signs while you watch.
  4. If you want, you can add one more form. It is called a self-proving affidavit. You and your witnesses sign it before a notary. It helps the court accept your will later.
  5. Keep the original somewhere safe.

Michigan does not allow electronic wills. You print your will and sign it in ink.

Remote online notarization where Michigan allows it, never for wills.

How to sign your healthcare directive
  1. Gather two adult witnesses. Your witnesses cannot be your spouse, parent, child, grandchild, brother or sister. They also cannot be your doctor or your patient advocate. And they cannot be anyone who may inherit from you.
  2. Sign your patient advocate form while both witnesses watch.
  3. Each witness signs while you watch.
  4. Keep the original somewhere safe. Share a copy with your doctor.
How to sign your financial power of attorney
  1. Choose how you will sign. You can use a notary, in person or online, or two adult witnesses.
  2. With a notary, sign in front of the notary.
  3. With witnesses, sign while both watch. Then each witness signs. Neither witness can be an agent you name in it.
  4. Keep the original somewhere safe.
How to sign your revocable living trust
  1. Sign your trust in front of a notary.
  2. The notary notarizes your signature.
  3. Keep the original somewhere safe.

We give you a printed signing checklist for each document.
